Nightmares

I had such a terrible nightmare last night. Seriously. It was one of those that you think are completely real and you find yourself literally begging for it to all be a dream.

I was pleading with myself to wake up...I tried vainly to make my body move but my limbs were like dead weights. I began shouting at myself, desperation at a fever pitch. I was wandering alone on a dark, empty street searching and screaming. Tears running down my face as I looked for a doorway home, out of this nightmare...and then I finally woke. My palms were sweaty, my heart was racing and pure terror was coursing through my body. I don't have these types of dreams often but this one involved my nephew and I have never felt more helpless or panick stricken in my life.

I have always had strange dreams so I began keeping a dream journal several years ago. I usually keep a pad of paper and a pen near my bed so when I'm slowly coming out of the dream, I jot down as much as I can remember and then I pass out again leaving my notes to be deciphered at a later time. It's always interesting to go back and read over them because a lot of the dreams are waaay out there. I swear, I have never touched any sort of drug in my entire life but in some of these dreams you'd honestly believe that I was on something. It's a bit crazy but at least it gives me good material to draw on for the stories that I write.

did you eat some cheese before you went to bed or something?
my mum used to say if you eat cheese before you go to bed then you have nightmares. i think there was an experiment done over here recently about different cheeses and dreams...something dodgy like that anyway

Those ones where you trip and wake up suddenly are really irritating. They always happen as I am just about asleep for the night. Then I can't sleep for hours.

I used to have this repititive nightmare that started when I was about 8 and I didn't stop having it until I was 14 or 15. I had it at least 1 once a week. Everyonce and a while, It'll show up again.

I hate those dreams where you're begging yourself to wake up...but then it's always such a relief to actually wake up and realize it wasn't real.
You should meet my friend Lisa - she always has the most bizarre dreams - dogs singing "heartbreak hotel" and whatnot...

I' ve had those kind of crazy dreams too and it freaks me right out...especially when you try in vain to stop it and can't - I hate the helpless feeling. So you are not alone and they do pass, they have always for me...thankfully they are short lived incidents.

Sounds very unpleasant.
A dream journal: I wonder why it is, some people have interesting dreams and others will dream of a bowl of prawns or the like :-)

How do blind people dream? Do they dream that they can see or do they dream in smells and sounds? Would a blind person's nightmare involve footsteps on cobbled streets, dripping water, a thunder crash and the smell of really strong fish. If anyone knows... curious. Oh, by the way... I think nightmares are a positive. We so rarely feel fear and horror in our daily lives (thankfully) it is good to feel these emotions (in the security of dreaming) because... well... that's what life is all about and you can only fully appreciate being happy and safe when you've experienced somethign scary. Well, that's my incredibly long opinion anyway...

My sleep has been all messed up. Something with my circadian rhythms. And my crazy life. I am not having nightmares but really weird dreams. And I wake up all the time. IT SUCKS!

I've been know to wake myself up screaming...I'll have one of those scary dreams where you can't scream so I'll start breathing hard and then keep trying to scream until I finally yell out so loudly that I wake up. My boyfriend has gotten used to it (it's happened about 7 times in the 2 years we've been together)...thank goodness because it's not the sexiest trait when seducing a new lover:)

My husband says that when I wake up in the morning and I'm half asleep and talking in my sleep telling him about my dream that I have said some pretty bizzare things. He said that one time I dreamed I was Val Kilmer. It was after the movie came out of Being John Malcovich. Never saw the movie but it sure did make for a good dream. :)

Sorry 'bout your twisted dream Linny. Ick. I hate that. Could make a person wake up in a foul mood.

To add to Innocent Bystander's comments, what to infants dream? When my nephew was born he would dream. His eyes would flicker and dodge and his arms and legs would flail. He would get the most cranky looks on his face or even smile for no reason.
Ok...sure sure...it's just gas. Nuh-uh. Surely they dream. Oof sounds and feelings and that bright light and doctor's and nurses. That'd be enough to make anyone squinch up their face.

That sucks Girl. I have those dreams too and they terrify me. It's like I'm half awake and my body is paralyzed. I'm screaming in my dream but my mouth only makes the faintest wimper.

There are so many comments that I can't read them all. Believe me, it's not food that causes or influences dreams. I'm not going to write a dissertation about dreams here, but if you e-mail me your dream I'll analyze it for a modest co-pay. This only goes for Linny. The rest of you are completely nuts.

I tried keeping a dream journal but I can't see anything without my glasses or contacts so there was always this horrible scrawl that I couldn't read going all over the paper. I gave up.

I like the idea of a dream journal.

Ahhhhh.... i always have bad dreams and it's so frusterating! And if they're not bad, they're "busy" enough to make me feel completely unrested when I wake. I should start a journal, too, except that I dream about my high school sweetheart almost every night :( so the hubby probably wouldn't like that!
