My Hairdresser...My Confidant

Guys, don't worry. I know that this is one post you probably cannot relate to...or maybe you can...hmmmm.

Just exactly what is it about going to your hairdresser that makes you want to spill your guts? I'm serious. When I got my hair cut last weekend, I settled into the comfy chair and found myself telling my stylist all about the reunion and The Ho and then we got to talking about my most recent exboyfriend and why it didn't work out...ya da ya da ya da. I realized that I was telling her things that normally only my closest friends know and I had no qualms about it. The girl that does my hair is a cool chic. She's easy to talk to and she remember EVERYTHING...so the next time you come in she's good about asking how things in your life are going.

I don't know what it is about those salon chairs but somehow it's like you're sitting in a confessional waiting to divulge all of your dirty little secrets.

On a side note....I'm sooooooo excited!! The new Robert Jordan book (Book 11 in The Wheel of Time series) comes out today!!! I've been waiting forever. I wish there was a bookstore open right now but it looks like I'll have to wait until lunch time. Yipee!!!!!!!! Sorry, Robert Jordan is just my favorite author ever...if any of you like Fantasy...you should definetly pick up the first book in the series "The Eye of the World."

I do the same thing with my hairdresser!! And you know, I never thought about it till right now. They are the women's version of a bartender.

it's the chair
it's like a psychiatrist's chair, you sit there and unprompted you just feel the need to blurt everything out
and the feeling of comfort

...but being a bloke i tend to just sit there and wait until i can put my glasses back on and see the hachet job that they've done on my hair

as for the book...who? never heard of him, i just got the new terry pratchett book last week during my lunch and i'm happily reading my way through that

Shit! Jordan's book's out? Looks like I'm going to the bookstore in the a.m.

Do you think the fucker will ever finish it? He's been pissing me off with the last three or five books ... he's a fucking tease and drags shit out too long!

and what the hell was with that "preview" book? I fucking refused to buy it. The ass!

That said, I can't wait! LOL

I think it has to do with a few things. It can be awkward if you don't talk...so people will say anything just to fill that void. Also, this person is washing, touching, cutting, etc...it's all very relaxing, which helps the barriers come down and also, it can be very intimate. I love it when people play with my hair.

Just my thoughts...no hard science.

I think people should make haircutting a first date. It would probably make it easier to talk to each other.

I know what you're talking about! I tell my hairdresser everything! I think they do that so that you are scared to leave them. They can totally blackmail you.

I’m on my way to the bookstore!

Lilth...I just picked up my copy during lunch. I've been trying to read it but people keep interruting me. Damn them. Now lunch is over...will have to continue after work.

I;m jealous! You have found a decent hairdresser!
As for Jordan, have you tried anything by David Weber or Jim Butcher? And Terry Pratchertt is always worth reading. The number of people I have managed to hook on him, including religious fundamentalists, is enough to make me smirk.

Secretly, I think that hairdressers are psychiatrists. Cutting hair is just something they do while they listen to pass the time, and make mental notes.

i'm missing the "talk to hairdressers" gene. it's strange, i normally can't get myself to shut up, but i get all weirded out trying to talk to a hairdresser for some reason. so it always evolves into somewhat awkward silence. oh well. good thing i neglect my hair for the most part :-)

It's the head massage as they wash your hair - after that we are like putty in their hands, totally relaxed.

i used to get my hair cut in a barbers in the toilets near Chatham train station. its still there! theres nothing quite like having your hair done whilst people do their 'business' the other side of the glass!

i've been going to the same old italian man for like 5 years i dont think i could trust anyone else ever...

sometimes when he's not there, or my backup, val, isn't there and i have to go with someone else... i feel like i'm cheating on him.

hahaha - but i just like the way he cuts my hair, cuz everyone else butchers it.
but i dont talk about my deep personal shit... just complain about the weather and work u know?

this sounds kinda weird, but I'd only have the urge to spill my guts out if the hairdresser was like,a metro or homo or something Andy Dick like that.

Please don't judge me.

I can't complain about Jordan never finishing. I love the series so much that I hate to see it end. A lot of people complain about him being too wordy but it's never bothered me. I just soak it all up. I just feel like he's such and amazing writer...

He only has one more book to write for the series(book 12) and then he'll write 2 more prequel books.

px--OH MY GOD! Thud! is waiting for me at the library and I haven't picked it up yet! Is it just as fantastic as his previous few? (And indeed, almost all of the Discworld series?)

And linny, I'm the same with my stylist, but that's partly because she's just ten years older than I am, she also has big dogs, and she's just as feisty if not more so. She gets to do whatever she wants with my hair. I bless the day I found her.

wow...I am the polar opposite! When I'm getting my hair...or nails...or eyebrows done I have no desire to converse with the people--I just want to get my stuff done while I'm left alone with my thoughts...but apparently I'm one of the (antisocial) few who think this way! The strange part is, my dentist likes to have conversations too........
