Night Terrors

I am such a chicken shit. I am 28 years old and I am afraid of the dark. I have been for as long as I remember...it's sad but true. When I was growing up, my dad loved the Twilight Zone and scary movies about aliens and boogey men so if we wanted to watch tv at night, that's what we had to watch. For a long time I'd wait until my parents fell asleep, then I'd pull my blankets over to my door way and sleep in the floor because mom kept the hall light on and I figured that way I had a better chance of seeing any aliens before they tried to abduct me.

Okay, so now I'm not scared of aliens anymore but I've never been able to shake the phobia. I sleep with the tv and a hall light on.

Last night I had fallen asleep on the couch when I heard the shrill shrieking of a woman somewhere around me, immediately followed by thunder exploding outside my window with such force that my walls shook. I was so thoroughly frightened that I jumped straight off the couch and stood shaking in the middle of my living room as I tried to gain my bearings. Apparently, I'd been watching something on the Sci-Fi channel before I fell asleep and the scary movie that was playing had managed to weezle it's way into my subconsious. (ie: the screaming woman). Add this to the raging storm outside and you have one big sissy.

Needless to say, I switched the tv to the Disney channel and turned on various lights in the house. I need therapy.....

OH NO..thats horrible LOL!!! And I dont mean to laugh...awww...you poor thing. I can tell you, for the amount of scary shit that I watch, still walking upstairs at the end of the night with all the lights off, creeps me out....but then again, that's probably self inflicted.

We all have phobias - at least it isn't a strange one.

I once woke up in much the same manner, except it was to "screaming" on the Playboy Channel.

Oh, Should explain perhaps, that after certain hours, this is what my Nature Channel changes to :o)

My family lived in Romania when I was 8-11 years old. My younger brother and I started having the same nightmares after living in our creepy house for about 6 months. There was a presence that would come out of the servant's stairwell in the back of our enormous house and float down the hallway to come eat our souls. It was accompanied by a weird sort of muttering or white noise and took the shape, in my mind, of a malevolent, glowing orb. I would wake up, freaking out after only a few hours of sleep and me and my brother both knew that they only way to be safe was to sleep in our doorway with the door open. We would sleep peacefully after that. My dad would walk out of their bedroom and trip over us in the morning yelling, "The kids are in the goddam hallway again, honey!" This particular nightmare only happened for about one week a month and stopped once we left that creepy house. There were all sorts of rooms in that house that made the skin crawl, even for my older brothers.

Linny I understand. My grandfather had a farm out in the middle of nowhere. At night it would get so dark you couldn't see your hand in front of your face.

My dad used to like to walk, at night, into the back pastures and just go sit and armadillo hunt. From time to time I would go with him, but many times he went by himself.

Well, when I was an adult, I went to the farm to visit my uncle. On the drive down I told myself I would do what my dad did, which was to walk into the woods, alone, at night and just sit, reflect, experience the darkness.

Well, I got about 50 yards from the main house and just froze. Couldn't make myself go any further. So, I turned around, walked back to the house, crawled into bed, turned on the light, and read a "sports" related bio to take my mind off of the tail between my legs, so to speak--lol.

I understand my child--lol. ;-)

Don't feel bad - I still freak out whenever I see the "Wheelers" from Return to Oz. Those guys scare the shit out of me 20 years after the fact.

I'm usually fine in the dark, but if I watch a scary movie or read a scary book I hide under the covers! I've even gotten my son out of bed to sleep with me and he's only six! I did that only once! LOL!

My boy and I watched SAW and I made him look in all the closets and under the bed to make sure nobody had gotten in the house when it was done. Still freaks me out!

I used to sleep with the light on when I was young. If I woke up in the dark I would get lost in my own room, and not be able to find my way out to go to the loo!
I find I sleep really well with lights on, but these days I turn them off.

What you have to do is completely cover yourself with the blanket. Not even a little toe exposed. If they can't see you, they can't find you. Boogeymen and aliens always fall for that trick. They're really a bunch of ugly morons is what it comes down to.

Have you tried hypnotism? It really works for a lot of people to overcome fears and phobias.
