It's A Sickness

I get the distinct impression that to some people, being single in your late 20's means you're like a lame horse that needs to be put down.

I'm sorry, did I miss the billboard that says, "Only losers are still single" ?

Example #1
Following the recent passing of her grandfather, my friend P and her family met with the Funeral Director to write the obituary. At one point the Director began listing the surviving family. He mentioned my friend's brother and his wife...her sister and her husband...then he wrote my friend's name and looked up at her expectantly. She shook her head and said, "Oh no...it's just me." The Director narrowed his eyes..."What, you don't have an 'and' ? "

Example #2
You'd think it stops there. Oh no kimosabe. This sickness has crossed continents and tainted those inhabitants as well.

During an overseas trip for work, Cathy was meeting with a client who casually asked what age most American women get married. Cathy thought about it and said, "I don't know...maybe 25?"

The woman eyed her up and down, allowing her eyes to linger on her bare ring finger. "Hmmm. And you're well past that I take it?"

I'm afraid I might have said, "Take this!" And then shown her my middle finger.

I feel like a leper. My friends 2 of whom are married and one engaged, were all sitting around talking about a dinner party. They named off each person and her respective other and said "and Ash, you can come too."

I was also at a wedding party when all the girls suggested getting together and having a party where they could all wear there wedding dresses again, cause they only wear them once. My friend and i were the only single ones at the party...only she's the one getting married now.

I have to agree... this sort of thign really bugs me. Of course, then I also read stuff like this that calls people without kids leaches on society and it really makes my blood boil. Not that I don't hope to at some point... but honestly... why is everything to be looked down on, or turned into a big fight? I'm sorry if I haven't been on your schedule. Sheesh.

You should just say you are a widow, that will shut the world up.

More and more women are waiting til their 30's to get married. I would rather be single than marry the wrong guy like I almost did because I felt pressured from society's ideals. As of right now I have no desire to get married, I know I am not ready.

Went to a close friend's wedding vow renewal party only a month after my husband's death. I was unceremoniously placed at the "single" table between two men - complete strangers. It was a very uncomfortable experience. Being a widow doesn't shut people up at all.

I know what you mean...I HATE that. I know there is nothing wrong with me and it is a sure fire way to piss me off by treating me as if there is just because I am not willing to simply "settle" for just anyone. (like about 75% of the people who are making me feel like a leper in the first place.)

Plus, I feel that our biggest setback is location...WHERE are the GOOD single men in Ga.?

Ahh, well. I agree with your summation. But, why do people have to make their comments political, in a non political scenario. I'm sorry, I am a Republican, and get tired of getting bashed.

Actually, this does happen to guys. A similar thing happened to me when my grandmother died a while ago. In listing surviving family, My cousin and, my sister and ... then me. "And?" he asked. Noone. Just me.

I was talking to a co-worker from the night job during a break last Monday. She asked if I had family... I told her my parents were in B.C. and my sister in Seattle, with other members in Ontario.

"But what about your family? Don't you have children?"

Ah, no. If I did I'm sure I would have mentioned them in the geographic rundown of my family tree. She was shocked I wasn't married with seven children by now.

Also, several years back, my father had a quiet word with me: "I'm still expecting more grand-children, you know."

I guess he's still expecting.
