What's In A Name...

Me and Dad

Nicknames...you can love them or hate them...but you can never get rid of them.

Such is the case in my family. My very first nickname was Toot toot....and not for the reasons some may suspect. I, Linny wanted to be a train when I was itty bitty. Not a train conductor, but a TRAIN. (I still harbor a fondness for trains by the way.) I would crawl around on the floor, "Toot toot!!" My mom would ask me if I was thirsty..."Toot toot!" She'd ask me if I needed to go potty, "Toot toot!" As I got older something terrible happened, someone wrote a country song called "Don't mess with my toot toot." This song was used as a torture device by my brothers and sister for years! I can still hear them singing in the car, "Don't mess with my toot toot. Don't mess with my toot toot. You can have the other woman...but don't mess with my toot toot." Road trips were especially long for me.

Fortunately, over time this nickname seemed to fade from everyone's memory...I wasn't so lucky with the other one. For as long as I can remember, my parents have called me Face. The reason behind the name varies according to whom you ask. My mother would tell you it's because they thought I had such a beautiful face, my father would say that it's because of the face I always made when I was pissed off (this seems like the more logical answer). It didn't bother me when I was younger but once I hit puberty I became mortified when the name was used around my friends. Then the first time a boy called my house...oh forget it. One of my brothers happened to answer the phone and all I heard was, "FACE!!! Your boyfriend's on the phone!!!!" I wanted to curl up and die.

That nickname is still alive and kickin' and adorns most of my birthday cards. It's used most frequently by my Dad and my sister but my brothers will use it when they find occassion to annoy me. Truth be told, the name doesn't bother me so much anymore, I know it's generally said with fondness...unless my brothers used it.

Nicknames I think are a way of saying "I love you" without really saying it.

"Not a train conductor, but a TRAIN" You crack me up Linny :-) I wanted to be a TYPEWRITER when I was small - not a typist or a writer but the real McCoy. I do still love to type.

What a totally interesting nick name! I think when you are a teenager, anything at all seems embarassing... nothing really wrong about Face :-) My brother called me many worse things, but thank heavens nothing stuck. I don't really have a nick name except when my Dad or my Cousin call me Terry Sue. They are the only ones to do so.

Trée is my nickname. Mother gave it tooooo me at birth since she didn't like the name my father wanted for me--don't ask--lol.

What a pain going thur school and every year having to answer the same question.

I'm a big believer that Bob is a fan-f***ing-tastic name.

I couldn't say my sisters name when I was little so I called her Me mo (both long vowels). It stuck and she hated it for a while but I think she likes it now. I agree it is said out of love.

that brings a whole new meaning to "in your face!" ... LOL

I've had several nicknames myself ... I was "Big D" in high school. Teachers, administrators, parents and other relatives called me that. My sister's kids still call me "Uncle Big D."

LOL

Face, huh? That's funny!
Mine was "Corky" which I hated because I thought it sounded like "Porky" as in "Porky the Pig." So it very slowly became "CoCo" with my family and later, "Co" with my friends. And that's where it stands today. Just Co :)

I loved that song when I was little, my dad use to sing it to us kids..."don't mess with my toot toot" Gosh, I hadnt thought about that song in ages. Nick names are cool, everyone has them. But I never understood how you got a nick name from a nick name.
My family calles me Ninnie, Thru the years it has gone from ninnie to nit, to ni-nit, to na-nit.
Mostly my distant relatives use the ni-nit stuff, my nephews call me aunt ninnie, and my bros and sister, mom and dad call me nit.
I too use to hate it when I was younger, but now I love it.

What a great post. You know they wrote that song especially FOR you. I mean, afterall, wtf is a toot toot that shouldn't be messed with?? It had to be you. ;)

Agnes Mitchell is my nickname. It was given me by my grandfather. I do not remember him ever calling me anything else.

I could go on about nicknames but I think Angel said it best. Nicknames I think are a way of saying "I love you" without really saying it.

(And Bob is a perfectly good name!)

OK, wanting to be a train is just too funny. I never knew anyone who wanted to be an inanimate object before. Technically, I still don’t but now I am aware that it can happen. And so my worldview expands another notch.

Face… I agree, probably your Dad’s version of how you got the name is the true one. But as nicknames go, Face is… tame. It’s not mean, or childish, or particularly embarrassing. Now it you were still called Toot Toot... that would be embarrassing!

Nicknames don’t seem to stick with me. I will gain one for a while, amongst a certain group of friends, or co-workers, they will use it a while, and then it tapers off. This ID doesn’t qualify as a nickname because one) I gave it to myself, and two) It is only an online tag. No one calls me Blackcrag or Crag in daily life.
