Cartoon Day

The weekend is almost here!! Wooohooo! When I was a kid, the weekend was not known as Saturday and Sunday, instead we referred to the weekend as Cartoon day and Church day. We'd wake up on Saturday morning and spend the morning in our pajamas, eating oatmeal and watching cartoons. Problem these days...all the cartoons suck. On Saturday there aren't any cartoons to watch except on Nickelodeon and truth be told those aren't as cool as ours were. I say, let's bring back the old school cartoons! Let's march on Washington, picket Universal Studios...whatever we've got to do. Fortunately they've started to release some of these on DVD so I've been buying my favorites so that my nephew and my future kids will have 'real' cartoons to watch growing up.

My morning line up: Thundercats, Transformers, He-man, She-ra, The Littles, The Smurfs, Rainbow Brite, The Snorkles, The Get Along Gang, The Popples, The Mon chi chis, Strawberry Shortcake, The Care Bears, GI Joe, My Little Pony, The Gummi Bears...I'm sure there are more that I'm not thinking of. Not to mention all the Tom and Jerry and Road Runner stuff. What were your favorites?

I adored She-ra. What was that little creature you had to try to find throughout the show? I was hooked the first time I watched it.

I loved watching most of those cartoons that you mentioned, especially Smurfs and Gummi Bears. They totally rocked! And you're so right about the fact that today's cartoon programming just doesn't have the same quality that ours did.

I remember those, I used to watch Tom and Jerry all the WB cartoons, Duck Tales, Fraggle Rock, The Jetsons, the pink panther, and the old Mickey Mouse cartoons. On cable there is a station called Bommerang that shows alot of the old cartoons from when I was a kid. Oh yeah, don't forget Beavis and Butthead and Rin and Stimpy when I got a little older

I dressed as Mighty Mouse one year for Halloween. It was really cool and we have photographic evidence.

I saw a girl dressed as Mighty Mouse on Halloween in the Metro. It made me feel all nostalgic and shiot.

They don't play my favorites anymore - the old Bugs Bunny and crowd (many were quite politically incorrect), Snaggle Puss, Mighty Mouse, Rick O Shay Rabbit, Flintstones, Quickstraw McGraw, Mr. Magoo, Top Cat, Heckle and Jeckle, Pink Panther - sigh I want to go home and see them all again. I remember Puff and Stuff :-)

Oh man, I loved those cartoons! Especially the Smurfs, Rainbow Brite, Care Bears, the Popples, and Gummi Bears. Also Punki Brewster, My Little Pony, Cabbage Patch Kids, and there was one that didn't last long - I think it was called Dreamweaver - that was really cute.

There was one I could never remember the name of... it was about a rock band with two guys a girl, i think the bad guy was a manager, and they had this cool car that floated out of a jukebox?? maybe I don't remember it as well as I think i do.

Hey Girl!

(Trying to catch up…)

I loved every single cartoon you named along with most of those named here in the ol' comment box.

But you know, good cartoons still exist...At night. Late, late at night. ;)

I like this little nostalgia kick you're on. It makes me smile. :)

Hope you're doing well!

Ohhh linny, good choice of cartoons there - I loved roadrunner :D

Although, when I was growing up, the cartoons available to me that I watched were:

Teenage mutant hero turtles, Johnny Bravo, Dexters Laboratory, Cow and Chicken, I am Weasel and towards the end...The Powerpuff girls!

Towards the end?? Hell if I get the chance/time - I'll still watch em :D

I liked the Flintstones, the Jetsons, Scooby Do, Tom and Jerry, Bugs Bunny, Road Runner, Mickey Mouse and Daffy Duck, Porky Pig and all the old cartoons that played the classica music. I wish they would keep introducing the classic with the kids today... Yes, I'm old too.

You are so right, Linny! I miss all the cartoons from our generation. Good stuff! This new stuff is crap!
Of all of them, I want Thundercats to come back the most!

Oh Linny. I am so disappointed in your taste in cartoons. Shame on you! He-Man, Smurfs, etc... That's just awful You can't be a classic Scooby Doo (before Scrappy) and a good Super Friends. Speaking of the Super Friends, the main courthouse in my city is called The Hall of Justice. Whenever I'm in the parking garage I always look for the spot right next to the Batmobile.

My favorites included - Looney Toons, Hanna-Barbera (especially droopy), the smurfs, and mighty mouse. I'm sure I'm forgetting some of them.

I also agree about today's cartoons they are, for lack of a better word, dorky!! Of course I've heard some "pc" people say how violent Looney Toons was, and I just want to scream!!

Linny, Drywall Mom forgot to mention her all time favorite, Pinky and the Brain. She had a tee shirt with Pinky on it and she loved wearing it.
